In 2008, Jonnie Stewart, former American Wrestling Association (AWA) performer, Federally Trademarked and began using the AWA American Wrestling Alliance name in the state of Minnesota with the authorization from the Minnesota Secretary of State.
By 2009, the organization began to franchise the AWA name, selling memberships to existing independent promotions around the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Japan.
Several members of AWA were former members of the National Wrestling Alliance. Stewart then began co-promoting shows with promoters around the world.
In 2016, it was announced that the American Wrestling Alliance was developing a reality show based on rescuing independent wrestling organizations, the show is scheduled to appear in the late 2019 Fall season.
